The biggest impact to the kitchen layout is the enlarged 8 ft wide opening. The kitchen now directly connects to the adjacent dining room. The enlarged opening also mirrors the opposite wall opening that connects the dining room to the living room. A 6 ft wide center island now houses the cooking appliances. I even managed to fit in an island overhang where 3 stools will be placed. It was a tight fit and the absolute minimum aisle clearances, but I was determined to make it work. The sink, dishwasher, refrigerator and remaining cabinet locations remain virtually the same. Oak 2-1/4" t&g wood flooring will be installed to match the rest of the flooring in the house. I considered relocating the side window to be centered on the island, but it is already centered on the roof ridge from the exterior and I thought that to be the more important alignment.
